IPL Photofacial can address multiple issues at once, and because we utilize the Lumenis M22, we can handle an impressive range of concerns without switching machines or varying treatment. A revolutionary, all-in-one laser system, the Lumenis M22 treats more than three dozen skin concerns, from vascular issues and pigmentation irregularities to signs of aging and unwanted hair, and can address multiple problems during a single session.

What is an IPL Photofacial?

Photofacial is a laser skin treatment that uses pulsed light to stimulate collagen and improve several skin conditions. Also known as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or simply as Pulsed Light Therapy, a Photofacial can be used to address:

  • Fine Lines
  • Sun Spots
  • Freckles
  • Spider Veins
  • Broken Capillaries
  • Hyperpigmentation

If you struggle with any of these issues and are looking for a safe, effective, non-surgical treatment option, an IPL Photofacial may be the exact procedure you’ve been waiting for.

Candidates for IPL Photofacial

The Lumenis M22 Photofacial can be used to address skin discoloration, including rosacea and keratosis, acne and acne scars, signs of aging, benign tumors, precancerous growths, dyschromia and pigmentation issues, lentigines, and vascular issues, including telangiectasia. The device can address birthmarks, including port wine stains and the skin’s general redness. The best way to learn if it can meet your needs is through a one-on-one consultation at the Leawood office of Dr. Levi Young.

Lumenis® M22™

We are pleased to offer the Lumenis® M22™ Device for our Photofacial treatments. This state-of-the-art device offers a multi-application platform, enabling it to treat 30 skin conditions and be useful for laser hair removal

Designed with nine removable ExpertFilters™ and patented SapphireCool™ light guides, the Lumenis M22 allows for the treatment of both large and small areas, including the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, and legs.

The universal handpiece allows for rapid changing of filters and light guides, helping to shorten treatment duration and improve the overall patient experience. What’s more, Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) helps make treatment with the Lumenis M22 a gentler and more comfortable experience that can be completely customized to meet the needs of the individual.

IPL Photofacial Procedure

Photofacial with the Lumenis M22 is incredibly gentle. During treatment, you may experience some warmth as the light is applied. This is not painful and will not produce any lasting side effects.

Residual redness is common for two to 24 hours following treatment with the Lumenis M22, but this should subside on its own.

While safe for most skin tones, people who have had freckles or certain types of lesions treated may experience temporary darkening. Bruising is also possible, particularly following vascular treatments to areas outside the face.

It may take more than one photofacial treatment to reach your desired goals. Much of this depends on the condition being treated. Most people experience results within one to two days, though it may take up to one week to determine the effectiveness of your treatment.

IPL Photofacial Results and Recovery

  • 2-5 Days
  • High Activity

Recovery from IPL Photofacial is relatively fast, with most people resuming normal activities within two to five days. We will provide you with aftercare instructions, including antibiotic ointments when necessary, to help ensure you continued comfort as you heal.

Side effects of IPL Photofacial are rare and typically very mild. However, redness, slight swelling, and discomfort are all possible after treatment. These things should self-correct, but we can provide instructions for dealing with them to help improve your experience. In most cases, these side effects only last for a few days.

IPL Photofacial is safe to perform every two to three weeks.  The number of IPL Photofacial treatments you will need depends on factors unique to your anatomy and lifestyle. Some people experience peak outcomes after just one treatment. However, four to six treatments spaced a few weeks apart are needed for optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I Prepare for IPL Photofacial Treatment?

While non-surgical and minimally invasive, there are still some steps to take in preparation for IPL Photofacial treatment. This includes ceasing certain medications, such as Accutane®, in the weeks leading up to your procedure. In addition, topical ointments containing Retin-A or Retinol, bleaching creams, glycolic acids, chemical peels, and exfoliants will need to be avoided the week before treatment.
We ask that you arrive at your appointment with freshly cleaned skin. Please do not use makeup, lotion, or similar facial products before treatment. Taking these steps, along with other preparatory measures, will help reduce risks, improve outcomes, and speed your recovery rate. We will provide detailed instructions before your treatment to help ensure you are fully prepared.

Rarer still have more advanced complications such as edema, blistering, hyperpigmentation, keloid formation, leukotrichia, and hematoma been linked to IPL Photofacial. These risks are even further reduced when you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Young, who can fully assess your candidacy for the procedure and provide personalized and accurate medical advice to help ensure the most comfortable recovery possible. Making sure to practice proper aftercare will assist with this, as well as with any swelling which may occur during the recovery period.

After treatment, you will continue to age. Your skin will continue to face environmental factors, and be equally impacted by the lifestyle choices you make. You can help to extend your results by adopting a skincare routine designed for your needs. We offer a full selection of SkinMedica® products to assist each patient in this goal.
You can further lengthen your results by using sunscreen, avoiding tobacco products, getting plenty of sleep, and staying hydrated. We would be happy to provide you with additional suggestions – based on your lifestyle – during your time in our care.

Using a cold compress during this time can help to reduce swelling. Using a gentle cleanser to keep skin clean will help prevent infection. You will also need to avoid whirlpools and hot tubs, hot showers, and sweat-inducing workouts during this time.
