Every woman is uniquely beautiful. However, many women struggle with certain aspects of their appearance that they wish to improve for cosmetic reasons or to relieve discomfort. The labiaplasty is a female genital plastic surgery that has been growing in popularity in recent years.

What is a Labiaplasty?

The surgical removal of excess tissue from the vaginal lips (labia) is called a labiaplasty. Labiaplasty cosmetic surgery reshapes and resizes the labia minora and majora, or the inner and outer lips of the vagina. It’s often done to alleviate physical discomfort from enlarged labia and emotional stress during intimacy.

The labiaplasty procedure alters the thickness or size of the labia to make them smaller or more symmetrical. This form of vaginal rejuvenation helps restore comfort and shape without hindering sexual ability or decreasing sensitivity. In some cases, labiaplasty increases sensitivity by removing excess tissue covering the clitoris.

The benefits of the labiaplasty include:

  • Eases mild to moderate pain during intercourse or exercise
  • Alleviates any embarrassment from enlarged labia showing through swimsuits and tight clothing
  • Corrects asymmetrical labia
  • Increases arousal and stimulation of the clitoris by removing excess tissue
  • Addresses protrusion that may cause frequent urination
  • Improves or eliminates emotional discomfort during intercourse
  • Addresses hygienic issues

Candidates for labiaplasty must be in good health, fully developed, entirely healed after childbirth, nonsmokers, have an enlarged labia, and should not take medications that can affect their surgery or healing process.

The best way to determine if labiaplasty is the right move for your body goals is to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as our Dr. Young in Kansas City.

Labiaplasty Recovery and Results

  • 1-2 weeks
  • Low activity

As with any surgical procedure, some discomfort is to be expected with labiaplasty. You will require one to two weeks off work to allow your body to rest. You will be provided with medications and specific instructions to help reduce any pain. Any significant pain, particularly if accompanied by discharge, should be brought to the immediate attention of Dr. Young.

It takes around one to two weeks for most women to feel comfortable enough to resume normal activities, although sexual intercourse and tampons should be avoided for six to eight. During your follow-up visits, Dr. Young will be able to help you determine when it is safe to resume all your normal activities. Your full results will emerge once your swelling subsides completely after a few months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Should I Prepare for My Labiaplasty Procedure?

In preparation for labiaplasty, you will need to stop taking over-the-counter and prescription medications that thin the blood. Some herbs and supplements may also need to be stopped in advance of your procedure and, if you are a smoker, you will need to give up all products containing nicotine.

Because labiaplasty requires a short recovery period where activities are limited, it is a good idea to create a comfortable space at home where you can relax for the first few days following your procedure. It can also be helpful to arrange for assistance from a trusted adult who can help ensure you can rest during the first few days of recovery.

  • Can A Labiaplasty Be Combined With Other Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments?

Labiaplasty can be combined with vaginoplasty for complete vaginal rejuvenation. Labiaplasty focuses on the labia (vaginal lips) on the outside of the vagina. Vaginoplasty improves the vaginal opening as well as the general structure and shape of the vagina. Both procedures may be performed during a mommy makeover procedure as well to help restore full comfort to the vaginal area.

  • Will I Lose Feeling If I Have A Labiaplasty?

The removal of labial tissue is unlikely to affect vaginal sensitivity. More commonly, the procedure will reduce discomfort by eliminating the rubbing of labial tissue against clothing.

The labiaplasty is intricate plastic surgery, and only a board-certified plastic surgeon should perform the procedure.
