Woman looking at saline and silicone breast implants

There are two types of breast implant: saline, which are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, and silicone, which are filled with silicone gel. Newer silicone implants, colloquially known as “gummy bear implants,” contain a cohesive silicone gel that more closely mimics natural breast tissue in feel and responsiveness, but these are still silicone implants in the strictest sense.

While there are two types of filling for breast implants, all breast implants have a silicone outer shell. Silicone is durable and resilient and, under most circumstances, your breast implants will not need to be replaced unless you desire a change in size or shape, or you would like to have them removed.

There is a common misconception that breast implants will only last for ten years, but there is nothing to support this idea in the data collected about implants over the last several decades. There are, of course, some instances of implant failure, but this is not the norm and needn’t be expected. However, there is some evidence that implants with silicone filling are less likely to experience issues than their saline alternatives.

In addition to breast augmentation with implants, Dr. Young offers fat transfer breast augmentation. This option forgoes implants altogether in favor of purified fat that has been taken from a donor area on your body. There are some benefits to fat transfer breast augmentation, including the contouring of the donor site, which may make it an attractive option for some women. During your initial consultation, Dr. Young will discuss this and all of your breast augmentation options to help you choose which might best meet your specific needs.
