Common Questions About Breast Augmentation Surgery

DR. LEVI YOUNG, MD

breast augmentation surgery questions kansas city plastic surgeonAccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), plastic surgery continues to be on the rise and saw increases in nearly every procedure in 2017. Breast augmentations continue to be the number one surgical procedure sought out by people in the U.S., holding that title for nearly a decade. In 2017, there were 300,378 breast augmentation procedures performed in the U.S., a three percent increase from 2016.

At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Levi Young understands that women looking to have breast augmentation surgery do so for many reasons. Whether it’s to increase the size, shape, or fix asymmetry issues, Dr. Young has extensive experience performing breast augmentations and can help you achieve the cosmetic results you desire to help you look and feel great.

Because this is a popular procedure, many women come to us with questions about the process and the results they can expect. While every woman is unique and has specific concerns they’re addressing, there are a few questions that are more common that we often get asked.

A few of the most common ones we receive include:

What type of augmentation should I have?

  • Traditional breast augmentation surgery uses breast implants to increase the size and shape of your breasts. Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to allow our doctor to easily match your cosmetic needs and goals. An emerging trend in plastic surgery is performing breast augmentation with fat transfer. This technique uses your body’s own fat, which is removed from a target area such as your abdomen or thighs and is placed in your breast for a truly “natural” breast augmentation. Dr. Young can help you decide which procedure is best for your goals.

What implant should I use for my breast augmentation?

  • If you decide to have an augmentation with implants, one of the most important decisions will be deciding on what type of implant to use. The two main implant types are silicone and saline. Both of these implant types have benefits and specific qualities that may be better for your unique needs. Silicone implants are the most used because they offer a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants are only approved and safe for use in women 22 and older. Saline implants use saline inside of a silicone shell and generally cost less than silicone implants. These can be placed in women 18 years old and older.

What size implant should I get for my breast augmentation?

  • This is something that you and Dr. Young can discuss further during your comprehensive consultation. The right breast implant size is dependent on how large you want your new breasts in conjunction with factors such as your body type and frame and how elastic your skin is to allow for the placement of the implant. You may look at our before and after gallery to get a feel for how some results look on others.

The above questions are a few of the many that we often get during a breast augmentation consultation. Dr. Young is happy to answer any question you have or address any concern so that you can feel comfortable with your breast augmentation decision.
