What is a Brow Lift?

The brow lift, or forehead lift, can address drooping and deep wrinkles in the brow area that may make you appear fatigued and angry. Sagging (ptosis) of the eyebrows occurs as a person ages just as the rest of a person’s skin. This eyebrow ptosis not only causes a tired, angry appearance itself but also creates the appearance of excess upper eyelid skin and “crow’s feet” wrinkles lateral to the eyes. Many patients need the eyelids and eyebrows addressed at the same time, and the brow lift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) work well as combined plastic surgeries.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Levi Young, offers multiple options for addressing sagging eyebrows and tired eyes. What are the benefits of a Brow Lift?

Brow lift surgery is used to smooth the skin on the forehead. The procedure can also be used to lift drooping eyebrows into a more alert and youthful position. In some cases, a brow lift will also reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, the wrinkles that extend from the corners of the eyes towards the temples.

A majority of the benefits offered by brow lift surgery are aesthetic and include a more attractive and relaxed appearance. However, when eyebrows are obstructing vision, a brow lift can also help to improve the visual field by lifting skin and brows away from the eyes.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift?

Men and women of all ages want to improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, sagging, or volume loss in the face. The best candidates for a forehead lift are in good health and want to reverse the effects of aging such as:

  • Inherited low set eyebrows
  • Sagging eyebrows that give the appearance of excess upper eyelid skin
  • “Crow’s feet” wrinkles lateral to your eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles

Your Brow Lift Consultation at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery

A personal consultation and exam are crucial if you are considering a brow lift or another facial plastic surgery. Dr. Young will assess the multiple factors involved and explore the options and identify possible medical problems. You should be prepared to provide complete past medical information including previous surgeries, medical conditions, and medications or supplements.

During your consultation, Dr. Young will evaluate your skin quality, fat pads, and tone of the eyelids. By manipulated your eyebrows and eyelids with you in the mirror, we can determine what procedure(s) will deliver your ideal results.

How is the Brow Lift Performed?

The brow lift procedure can be done with four to five small incisions hidden in your scalp and using an endoscope to do the required surgery at the eyebrows. This endoscopic technique works very well in many patients. Some patients with very lax skin may have a better long-term result with the classic “open” technique, which utilizes an incision across your scalp. Both methods can have excellent outcomes in the appropriate patient. Neither approach requires shaving of hair.

Does a Brow Lift require anesthesia?

Brow lift surgery requires either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Which of these options will be best for your needs depends on factors unique to your anatomy, medical history, and desires. During your time in our care, we will provide honest information about these options to help you select the best one for your needs.

How long does a Brow Lift procedure take?

A forehead lift may take one to three hours depending on factors unique to the patient. We offer both traditional and endoscopic brow lift options, enabling Dr. Young to customize each procedure. The best way to determine how long your surgery may take is through a one-on-one consultation at our Leawood office.

What is the Recovery from a Brow Lift Procedure?

Brow lift surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis so you’ll be able to go home and start healing following your surgery. You’ll likely have some swelling and bruising which may get worse 1-2 days after your forehead lift. Icepacks on the area and elevating your head for the first few days may help. Dr. Young will go over your post-operative instructions, so you know what to expect during recovery.

You’ll have several appointments throughout this process from the consultation to a follow-up visit to check on how you’re healing. Scalp sutures are removed after about a week, and most bruising, and swelling should dissipate within two weeks.

How long will my Brow Lift results last?

Forehead lift can produce results for seven to ten years or more. Much of this has to do with how well you take care of yourself following surgery. Sun exposure, a poor diet, inadequate skincare, smoking, and excessive alcohol use will all work to undo your brow lift results. Conversely, proper skincare, including sunscreen use, and a healthy lifestyle may help your results last for several years. We will provide you with information on how best to maintain and lengthen your results to help ensure the longest-lasting outcomes possible.

Are There Risks to a Brow Lift Procedure?

Risks associated with a brow lift include general surgical risks such as infection and bleeding, along with adverse reactions to anesthesia or medications used during the procedure. Risks specific to brow lift surgery include unfavorable scaring, unpleasing or asymmetrical results, facial nerve injury, skin loss, and hair loss.

These risks are uncommon, but not impossible. They are greatly reduced when you choose to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs brow lift surgery in an accredited surgical facility such as a hospital, ambulatory center, or in-office surgical suite.

Does a Brow Lift Procedure Leave Scars?

Brow lift incisions tend to fade over the course of six months to a year. In many cases, incisions are hidden behind the hairline, making scars unnoticeable. You reduce your risks of thick and unsightly scars by following all of the pre and postoperative care instructions provided by our office. These include cleaning instructions along with recommendations against tobacco use, certain medications, and other irritants that can cause large and ropey scars.
