Breast Surgery Options

The most popular breast surgery options at the Kansas City office of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery are:

  • Breast Augmentation. Performed with breast implants, augmentation is used to improve the size, shape, and profile of the breasts. Dr. Young offers saline and silicone breast implant options, as well as form-stable (gummy bear) implants, enabling him to produce very specific and individually optimal results.
  • Breast Lift Surgery. Breast lift surgery addresses ptosis (sagging), nipple displacement, and loose skin to produce a firm, perky, and youthful-looking breast mound. With a variety of incision options and lifting techniques, Dr. Young can use this procedure to correct issues brought about by aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy.
  • Breast Reduction Surgery. When heavy, pendulous, overly-large breasts cause physical and emotional discomfort, breast reduction surgery is often the best option. By reducing excess tissue and unnecessary skin, breast reduction can improve clothing options and restore a more desirable profile to the entire upper body.

Many breast surgery options can be combined to produce ideal results in specific individuals. During your initial consultation, Dr. Young will provide you with honest and useful information about all of your options to help ensure you are selecting the techniques and services that will produce the results you deserve.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

To be frank, it doesn't take much to be an ideal candidate for breast augmentation. This is great news! To be a suitable candidate for this surgery means that you're in good physical and emotional health. Your physical health allows you to undergo anesthesia safely and to recover well after your procedure. Your emotional health can get you through any tough days that you have after surgery in terms of discomfort or frustration with your limited physical activity. Studies also show that emotionally well patients who have realistic expectations of their breast surgery tend to be the happiest with their surgical outcomes.

What are the Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery can be extraordinarily gratifying. Like breast augmentation, this procedure creates more visual alignment between the breasts and other parts of the body. In addition to creating better symmetry, the breast reduction procedure can vastly improve your life experience. You may feel much more physically comfortable in your own skin when your breasts are more proportionate to your body frame. Your bra straps may no longer dig into your shoulders. The weight of your chest will no longer pull your neck and shoulders forward, creating soreness and pain. Smaller breasts are also less likely to have the skin-to-skin issue that causes inflammation in the inframammary crease. In addition to gaining physical comfort, you may also experience much better self-confidence and emotional wellness after breast reduction. Doing so can enable you to wear more styles of clothing that suit you while also eliminating unwanted stares toward your chest.

Should I Get Breast Augmentation or a Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure that can do a lot to improve the appearance of the bust. Likewise, a breast lift can improve your appearance but in a different way. The breast augmentation procedure improves appearance by enhancing the volume and shape of your breasts using saline or silicone implants. This procedure makes the breasts appear larger and more shapely but does not reposition them to be perkier. In fact, breast implants can increase the weight of the breasts so can contribute to sagging if it has already begun! The breast lift does not increase the volume of the breasts but, due to the change in breast position (and possibly nipple location), the breast lift can give the illusion of greater breast volume. In fact, these two procedures are often performed together to achieve even better results.

What is Recovery Like After Breast Surgery?

While small details in each breast surgery differ from others, the general recovery period involves many of the same sensations and restrictions. Your post-op care instructions will discuss when you can shower, how to care for your incisions while they heal, and which activities you must avoid. In general, breast surgery patients must avoid lifting or holding heavy objects. Strenuous physical activity must be strictly avoided for six to eight weeks. Common post-surgical side effects, regardless of the breast surgery you've had, include swelling, bruising, and soreness or tenderness. While you may be able to return to work after one to two weeks, your activity restrictions may remain in place for up to eight weeks after surgery.

Breast Surgery for Men

Male breast reduction surgery is used to address gynecomastia, an emasculating condition in which excessive tissue in the chest produces the appearance of breasts in men. Male breast reduction is typically achieved through liposuction, but excision of glandular tissue may be needed in some cases.

Following gynecomastia treatment, some lifestyle changes may be needed to maintain results. Dr. Young will work personally with you to make sure have the tools you need to maintain a firm and masculine appearance following male breast reduction surgery.
