In preparation for your plastic surgery procedure, you will need to stop taking certain medications and supplements that can increase certain risks during and after surgery. During the planning phase of your procedure, Dr. Young will review the medications and supplements you are currently taking to help you determine which should be avoided – and at what point – before your procedure.

Which Vitamins Should I Stop Taking?

Generally speaking, supplements that can encourage bleeding or impact blood pressure should be avoided before plastic surgery. These include:

  • Vitamins E, C, and K
  • B vitamins
  • Fish oil/Omega-3s

Multivitamins, which often contain higher concentrations of nutrients, should also be avoided in the week leading up to surgery.

In addition, many food-based and herbal supplements might need to be avoided the week before surgery. These include turmeric, garlic, ginkgo, echinacea, and ginger. Green tea and other caffeinated beverages may also need to be limited.

“Supplement” with Food

To make up for the deficiencies you may experience when ceasing supplementation, commit to eating a well-balanced and healthful diet in the weeks leading up to your procedure. Nutrient-dense foods do not impact the body like vitamins and supplements, and may even assist in improving your immune response.

What About Medications?

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen must be avoided before plastic surgery. So too should blood thinners, such as clopidogrel, anti-coagulants including warfarin, certain diabetic medications, including non-insulin injectables, and antiplatelet agents such as dipyridamole. However, no medications should be stopped without consulting your primary care provider.

In assessing your candidacy for plastic surgery, Dr. Young will consider the medications you are taking and the conditions they are being used to treat. This helps ensure he can provide information specific to your needs in helping you determine how best to prepare for your procedure.
