dermaplaningIf you have pitted skin or acne scars or have facial hair you want to get rid of, consider dermaplaning. This minimally invasive procedure involves the use of a specialized instrument called a dermatome to smooth your face by removing the top layer of your skin. This treatment works well for reducing some scars and various signs of aging by revealing the undamaged layer under the damaged skin.

The Difference Between Dermaplaning and Dermabrasion

Both procedures resurface your skin. However, dermabrasion is a surgical procedure. Dermaplaning uses a sharp razor-like implement in the tool to shave the top layers of skin off.

Who Gets Dermaplaning?

Anyone can get dermaplaning as long as your health allows you to. It removes:

  • Acne scars
  • Peach fuzz
  • Scaly patches of skin (actinic keratosis) that could lead to skin cancer
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Dry or dull skin
  • Fine lines

If you have an active case of acne, skin rashes, eczema, a cold sore outbreak, or psoriasis, you should not have dermaplaning. Additionally, if you have skin burns (such as those from radiation therapy), freckles, moles, skin tags, or other skin growths, dermaplaning is not for you.

How the Dermaplaning Procedure Works

Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your goals and examine your skin to ensure it is healthy enough for dermaplaning. Your surgeon will also explain what you can expect at every step of the process, from the consultation to the end of your recovery period, and will review your health history. He may also take photos of the area you want treated so you can compare the before and after results.

During the procedure, your surgeon may put a numbing spray or cream on your face. Most people just feel a slight stinging or scratching sensation during the procedure; however, the process is not usually painful. You may need over-the-counter pain medication after the procedure to help with discomfort.
