Breast ReductionYou may consider getting a breast reduction if you have large, heavy breasts that cause pain in your neck, back, and shoulders. But how do you know if you are actually a good candidate for this type of cosmetic surgery? There are a few key factors our team will look for when determining if a breast reduction is likely to benefit a patient.

You Experience Physical Discomfort From Your Breasts

If your breasts are so large that they cause chronic headaches, indentations from bra straps, rashes under the breast crease, poor posture, difficulty finding properly fitted clothing, or inability to exercise comfortably, a breast reduction could help alleviate these issues. The physical discomfort is usually the result of having to carry excessive breast weight on a petite frame. A breast reduction removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. Most patients experience nearly complete resolution of pain and discomfort after surgery.

You Have Emotional Distress From Your Breast Size

In addition to physical discomfort, some women experience mental and emotional distress from having overly large breasts. You may feel self-conscious about the appearance of your breasts, lack self-confidence in your body image, avoid activities you enjoy, or feel unable to wear flattering clothing. A breast reduction can dramatically help you feel better about your appearance so you can pursue all life has to offer without embarrassment or inhibition. Your self-esteem can be transformed.

You Have Healthy Breast Tissue

To be a good candidate, you need to have healthy breast tissue without any signs of cancer or other abnormalities. Our surgeon will examine your breasts visually and palpably while also assessing your risk factors. We may order a mammogram and other scans prior to surgery to thoroughly rule out any existing problems.

Your Breasts Are Fully Developed

It is important to wait until your breasts are fully developed before undergoing a major surgery like a reduction. For most women, that means waiting until at least age 18 or older. There are exceptions when a teenage girl's breasts are so overdeveloped they are causing spinal issues, extreme emotional distress, or painful grooves from bra straps. In those instances, an early reduction may still be considered after a complete evaluation.
