In recent years, the plastic surgery industry has been on the rise. In the U.S., there was a two percent increase across all surgical and minimally-invasive procedures in 2017 from the year before. While breast augmentation has steadily been the number one surgical procedure for nearly a decade, liposuction has been a top five surgical procedure in the U.S., including being the second-most performed procedure for the last three years.
Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released their 2017 plastic surgery statistics report, which is the latest data on all surgical and minimally-invasive plastic surgery procedures. Their data shows that in 2017, liposuction was performed 246,354 times in the U.S., which is a five percent increase from 2016. Women accounted for the majority of liposuction procedures with 89 percent and 39 percent of all procedures were performed on individuals in the 40-54 age range.
Many plastic surgeons are attributing the rise in liposuction, and plastic surgery in general, to a growing economy, continual advancements in technology and recovery, and an increasingly aging population aiming to stay viable in the workforce with their younger colleagues.
At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Levi Young understands that there are many reasons one may want to have liposuction treatment. By combining compassion and an artistic approach to his work, he uses his experience to help you achieve the body contouring results you desire.
Many people have stubborn pockets of fat around the body. It happens to everyone. When we age our metabolisms slow and fat is more easily accumulated. For some, even diet and exercise cannot get rid of localized areas of fat. That’s where advanced liposuction can help. At our office, we can help you trim and tone your figure by removing fat from many areas of the body, including the:
- Thighs and hips
- Chest and back
- Flanks (love handles)
- Under the chin
- Male breast reduction (gynecomastia)
It’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. Liposuction is designed to help those with small areas of fat trim and tone their figure. As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to know if you’re a candidate for the treatment to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the procedure. Dr. Young will go over all candidacy requirements with you, as well as evaluate your past and current health during your comprehensive consultation.
Generally speaking, those who are good candidates for liposuction are:
- At or near a healthy, stable weight
- Do not have any serious diseases or illnesses
- Are not currently on any medications that are blood-thinning or healing-inhibiting
- Are not a smoker or can quit for a period of time
