Labiaplasty continues to grow in popularity, with the number of procedures occurring in the US increasing every year. The procedure is perfect for those looking to reshape their intimate places and enjoy the results for a lifetime.

What is Labiaplasty/Labia Minora Reduction?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure and female genital surgery that’s typically used to reduce the size of the labia. Many patients ask about this procedure because they are experiencing discomfort due to the size of their labia (including itching, irritation, twisting, or tugging) or because they don’t like the way they look and are self-conscious.

The labia are the folds of the skin around the vaginal opening. The outer folds are called the labia majora, and the inner folds are the labia minora. The labiaplasty can focus on either set of folds, but most often focuses on the labia minora.

During the procedure, Dr. Young can reduce the size of the labia or reconstruct the labia using other tissues. It all depends on the reason behind the procedure and the results you’re looking for.

Candidates for Labiaplasty Female Genital Surgery

Ideal candidates for labiaplasty are patients in good overall health who have realistic expectations and who are struggling with overly large labia. Candidates should also be experiencing discomfort during sexual intercourse, exercise, or when wearing tight clothing, and/or experiencing hygiene issues due to the size of the labia tissue. This can be the right treatment option for you if you are not confident with the size or shape of your labia.

We also recommend that you be over 18 years old, a nonsmoker, and be able to stick to your recovery guidelines.

Preparing for the Labiaplasty Procedure

To prepare for your labiaplasty surgery, you’ll want to first meet with Dr. Young for a consultation. During this appointment, he will review your medical history, ask about your goals, and build a custom treatment plan that meets your needs. There are several different techniques he can use, and he will advise you on the best one for your needs. He’ll also discuss possible risks and side effects.

We’ll also go over what to wear to the procedure, when to stop drinking or eating foods, what medications and activities to avoid, and how to prepare yourself for the recovery process. There are also some pre-surgery tests that may be required.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

To start your labiaplasty procedure, we’ll begin by administering local or general anesthesia. This will ensure your comfort throughout your procedure. From there, we will cleanse the treatment area. Next, Dr. Young will make an incision in the labia and reshape the area and/or remove excess tissue.

The labiaplasty technique used will depend on your concerns and the results you’re looking for. There is a trim procedure where excess skin is removed from the outer edge of the labia, and there is the wedge procedure, where Dr. Young will remove a wedge-shaped piece of tissue from the labia and then stitch the two sides together. This often gives a more natural appearance. In total, the procedure doesn’t usually take more than two hours.

Labiaplasty Recovery and Results

  • 6 weeks
  • low activity

After your labial reduction surgery, you will be able to return home immediately. If you were under general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you to and from surgery.

In the beginning hours and days of your recovery, you will have some swelling, discomfort, and possible bruising. This is completely normal and will subside as you heal. Dr. Young can also prescribe pain relievers to help with any and all discomfort. Cold compresses can also be helpful too.

Loose-fitting pants and undergarments are a must to ensure the area heals properly and there is less of a risk of complications.

You will want to limit strenuous exercise, smoking, and sexual intercourse for at least a few weeks. Dr. Young will give you a more exact date of when you can return to your normal activities at your follow-up appointments.

As for results, you will start to see improvements within the first couple of weeks, with most of the swelling dissipating after six weeks. That said, it can take up to six months for all the swelling to subside and for your final results to be fully visible.
